A planetary health approach to human development recognises that humankind has made significant progress in many ways with the industrial, green and technological revolutions as examples. But these development gains are now being offset by increasingly obvious disruption to the health of the planet. We can see this in depleted biodiversity, changing land use and cover, a massive increase in air pollution, shortages of natural resources, and the resulting damage to our lived environment most clearly demonstrated through recent pandemic and disease outbreaks and the climate emergency.

Held every 18 months, the Planetary Health Annual Meeting (PHAM) aims to connect the global planetary health community, seek solutions for the grand challenges facing humanity, and provide tools and drivers to support systemic change. Its past five events have brought together thousands of leaders from over 130 countries in gatherings held in the United States, Scotland, and Brazil. Recognizing the key role that Asia plays in planetary health challenges and solutions, PHAM2024 will be the first of its kind to be held in Southeast Asia. Malaysia is proud to be the host of PHAM2024 with the theme of “From Evidence to Action: Confronting Reality”, led by the Sunway Centre for Planetary Health at Sunway University, Kuala Lumpur.

With the theme of “From Evidence to Action: Confronting Reality”, PHAM2024 will acknowledge and internalize the fact that its roots in academia now position it well to be transformative, and that to rise to this challenge, planetary health must become transdisciplinary and grounded on partnerships and collaboration with other health-based solutions movements, such as One Health and Environmental Health, and fully joined up with and engaged in regional and global processes, especially those being managed by regional and sub-regional organizations, and the United Nations such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and successor arrangements, summits called by the Secretary-General, such as the 2024 Summit for the Future, and work led by the UN’s Resident Coordinators at country level. 

In this 6th installation of the Planetary Health Annual Meeting, the message will be clear: For science to be transformational, it must be crafted for action and communicated in ways that the public can understand, and decision-makers can act on.

Sunway Centre for Planetary Health
The Sunway Centre for Planetary Health works with Sunway University’s existing faculties and networks and with regional and international partners to shine a light on planetary health challenges and find solutions that can support the necessary transition that humankind must now make, including generating, translating and communicating evidence-based research. This now unavoidable transition means that we have to learn to do nearly everything differently, including producing and consuming food, manufactured products, and energy; constructing and living in our cities; managing our natural landscapes and resources; co-existing harmoniously and responsibly with social, artificial and digital tech; recalibrating the stories we tell ourselves about our place in the world, our relationship to Nature, and what it means to live a “good life".

Planetary Health Alliance
The Planetary Health Alliance is a growing consortium of over 350 universities, non-governmental organizations, research institutes, and government entities from 60+ countries around the world committed to understanding and addressing the impacts of global environmental change on human health and wellbeing.
